Episode 151 – Judit Gummlich – Embroidery on Knits

In Episode 151, we travel to the beautiful city of Hamburg where Madeleine takes you on a fun city tour and I interview the brilliant Judit Gummlich. Judit is a knitwear designer who also specializes in hand embroidery and she is the author behind the excellent book “Embroidery on Knits.” On top of that, we have a finished project in Bring & Brag and an ongoing project in Under Construction. And in Pop Psychology Madeleine explores the controversial Boyfriend Sweater Curse!

Judit Gummlich - Embroidery on Knits

Last year in July, Madeleine and I travelled up to Hamburg to interview Judit Gummlich. Her book, “Embroidery on Knits,” provides inspiration and step by step instruction for enhancing your knitted garments with hand embroidery. When I first saw the book, it immediately stood out to me as the most comprehensive guide on this subject. It is filled with immaculate, detailed handwork, practical advice, and stunning photography.

Judit is a true artist; her work is amazing, and she is also a wonderfully lovely person. You will really enjoy this interview!

Finding Judit Gummlich

Hamburg Travel Vlog

Madeline and I drove up to Hamburg last summer to interview Judit Gummlich, the author of the excellent book “Embroidery on Knits.” This was my first visit to Hamburg, and it’s a stunning city with plenty to explore. So we took the opportunity to create a travel vlog and give you a little tour around the city. We saw many wonderful places, including the popular Speicherstadt district and the fantastic Miniaturwunderland (miniature wonderland)!

Under Construction

Varde Rundfelt by Rauma

Madeleine has been thoroughly enjoying knitting the Varde Rundfelt for her boyfriend, Ryan! However, she did find that following the pattern instructions to a t would result in a loose, sloppy neckline. So, she explains the calculations she had to make to add some short row shaping.

Although, I didn’t have much time to explain this technique in detail to her, Madeleine managed to figure it out and produced a great end result!

A frequent comment beneath our last episode was to beware of the boyfriend sweater curse. The boyfriend sweater curse is a belief that gifting a hand-knit sweater to your romantic partner before you are married will inevitably lead you to break up. Madeleine decided to explore the possible mechanisms behind this curse in a fun Pop Psychology segment! She came across many theories and recommendations on how to avoid the curse, including having your partner sign a “Pre-Knitual Agreement!”

Bring & Brag

Fern sweater by Knitting For Olive

This is the first time I’m showing a new project on the show and it’s already finished. This was a really quick knit! I combined the Wildwinds yarn from Fleece & Harmony in the colourway Trondheim Blue with some Rowan kidsilk haze in a pale blue.

For the turtleneck, I used a larger needle size because when I tried on my first version, I found it a bit too snug, and I’m not fond of feeling constricted. So, I started with a 3.75mm needle for the neck and switched to 4mm for the yoke. When it was time to divide for the sleeves, I bumped up to a 4.5mm needle to give myself more room across the chest, then switched back to 4mm as I worked towards the waist to ensure a more tapered fit. Aside from that, there were no other changes to the design. It’s a super easy and enjoyable knit. The pattern is straightforward, with just one row of lace followed by two rows of stockinette, making it perfect for knitting while watching TV.
